» » A Message From the Principal When I was in school, my favorite teacher used colored chalk. I remember she would let us touch the smooth, pastel sticks if we handled them with care. At holiday time, she would sign out the school’s lone TV on a cart and show us a documentary on colonial times. We knew that one of the upper grade teachers taught with something called an overhead projector, but such advanced technology was reserved for the older students. Instruction today has a whole new paradigm. Our children are digital natives, and they are fluent in using the tools of the 21st Century.
Smartboards, clickers, iPods, iPads, Web 2.0 applications, and digital imaging are second nature to them. Chalk, even colored chalk, is reserved for the art room.

At Huth Road Elementary, we may not be able to provide every child with icloud computing via 4G handheld devices, but we are preparing each child for the ever-changing, fast-paced future. Critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, inter-dependence, innovation, citizenship and effective communication skills are all essential to success in the 21st Century, and we teach these to our children.
We use a variety of programs and instructional methods to bring the best to our children. Language arts and mathematics are our core subjects into which we integrate science, social studies, and character education. We use a balanced literacy approach to language arts with and as two of our primary resources. Mathematics is taught using which focuses on conceptual understanding and bringing children to mastery using a spiraled approach that introduces and reinforces concepts and skills over time. Character education is taught through a multilayered process. All Grand Island Central Schools have adopted the Viking Values: Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe as part of our initiative.
Students are instructed in how to apply the Viking Values to a variety of locations and situations in the school and community. We also use the research-based program, to help our students develop healthy social and emotional skills. In addition to academics, we offer our students a well-rounded curriculum that includes art, music, physical education as well as many after school clubs and activities such as chorus, Early Act, and newspaper club to name a few. Spanish is offered as an after school club through community education.
We service approximately 470 children in grades 2, 3, 4 and 5 with 5 classrooms for each grade level. Grand Island children in grades 2-5 are split between our school, Huth Road Elementary, and our sister school on the south end of the island, William Kaegebein Elementary. Students in grades PK-1 attend Charlotte Sidway Elementary. We believe in parent and community involvement in our school.
